VISUAL EXAMINATION
At Brooklyn Optica a comprehensive eye test & visual examination includes:
- The refraction to obtain the correct prescription.
- Binocular testing – how well the 2 eyes work together.
- Cycloplegic refractions for young children.
- Dilated fundus exams for diabetic monitoring.
- Visual field exams for glaucoma monitoring.
- Screening for pathology: We make use of fundus photography, ocular coherence tomography (OCT) and topography technology for early detection of pathology. Should pathology be suspected, the patient is referred to an ophthalmologist for further investigation.
CONTACT LENS FITTINGS
Our optometrists are qualified to fit a wide range of contact lenses Soft, disposable lenses in single vision, multifocal or astigmatic prescriptions. We also stock boxes of a number of soft contact lens brands, for your convenience.
SPECIALITY CONTACT LENS FITTINGS
Bespoke lenses such as hard (RGP) and speciality scleral contact lenses. Scleral contact lenses are a game changer for keratoconus, problematic post refractive surgery and irregular astigmatic patients. These dome shaped lenses act as a new refractive surface which enables us to correct the vision where glasses and disposable contact lenses can’t. Prosthetic, hand painted soft contact lenses can also be ordered and made to your exact specifications.
DRY EYE CLINIC
A wide range of environmental factors can contribute to dry eye like computer work, medication, contact lenses, refractive surgery and air conditioners. Hormonal changes during menopause can also influence tear production. Book an appointment at our new dry eye clinic to evaluate the health of your meibomian glands. We offer different solutions to dry eye treatment depending on the severity and cause.
MYOPIA MANAGEMENT IN CHILDREN AND TEENS
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a growing global health concern, with projections estimating that by 2050, approximately half of the world’s population could be affected. Myopia management focuses on slowing the progression of the condition, reducing the risk of severe eye problems later in life, and is most effective when started at school going age: the earlier the better! Strategies are tailored to individual needs and lifestyles and often involves the use of specialized spectacle lenses or specialized contact lenses, which is scientifically proven to be effective in slowing down myopia progression.
EXPRESS LABORATORY SERVICE
- Multifocals, bifocals and single vision lenses in clear plastic or Transitions (photochromatic plastic).
- Single vision plastic lenses with anti-reflective coatings.
- Extra thin single vision plastic lenses with anti-reflective coatings and blue light filter coatings.

Driving Licence visual screening forms At Brooklyn Optica
We believe in supporting our community. As a result, all proceeds of driving licence screenings are donated to the Guide Dogs Association of South Africa to train a guide dog.
